The un-plastered Cartoonist
Hi Guys,
my plaster finally came off though my hand still feels a bit funny. I guess I could go back to drawing the old strips like Deux Ex Machina and Anita's Shopping. But I plan to continue with Featherbottom for some more time, and see where it goes. You see, I'd always admired the great single-pane cartoonists like Jim Unger (Herman) and Wiley Miller (Non Sequitur). To me, that seemed the ultimate in cartooning - the ability to be funny with a single sketch and a handful of words, without plot or characters. Me, I've always needed the crutch of characters and plot in order to be funny. I never had the courage to try it for myself - until my accident more or less forced me into it. Now that I'm here, I'd like to explore this genre a bit more. I do believe I'm getting the hang of it. Although, you may have noticed, that I'm cheating a bit by still having the bare outlines of a plot and characters. I'll probably go back to my old strips at some point. I chafe a bit at the limitations on telling a story in this format, and I am a storyteller at heart. Until then, bear with me.
