The vineyards of Cully

For our hiking trip to the vineyards of Lake Geneva region, we used the tiny village of Cully on the banks of the lake as our GHQ. We dossed out in a lovely hotel called Hôtel Lavaux on hillock overlooking the lake. It had a view of the lake to die for. Highly recommended.

The first evening, we strolled around the town of Cully and along the lake. Here are some random pics of the village:

The chateau of one of the prominent local vineyard owners. There is money in them thar wine bottles.
The standard cat in the window shot. Is any blog on a village complete without it?

Next day, we set out for the hike in the vineyards overlooking Cully. The vineyards are ranged on the hills overlooking the lake. Lot of climbing involved. Sweaty work on a hot day. It was cooler than back home in Lyon, but just a bit.

Peeking into the pricey homes on the banks of the lake from atop the hill...

From time to time, great flocks of birds would arise from the Vineyards. Feeding on the grapes, no doubt. It is a wonder they have any grapes left over for making wine. On the other hand, perhaps they feed off the insects, thereby doing the vineyard owners a good turn.
Looking down on posh boating clubs of the super rich. This is where the Swiss super rich have their vacation homes. In one day, we saw more Porsches and Ferraris here than we get to see in a whole year in Lyon. In fact, our old Skoda was one of the very few ordinary cars on the road.

Looking further down towards the bigger towns of Vevey and Monterux (covered in the previous post)

A watering trough in the vineyard with lovely luminescent algae growing in it.

Right at the top of the hill, a nice resting point with a bit of welcome shade where we had lunch
