Although Dolly Parton wrote the original song in 1973 - based on something that really happened to her, by the way - the version I prefer is the cover that Olivia Newton-John did in 1976. Probably because that was the version I heard first. It played all the time on the radio around that time, my teenage years. IMHO the ONJ version sounds more piercing and heartfelt, although ironically the event actually happened to DP! Not that the DP version is anything to be sneezed at.
