Bales of hay in Burgundy
These square bales of hay dotting a vast field in Burgundy seemed somehow surreal to me. Or perhaps it was just the wine I had at lunch. It seemed like one of those old Pink Floyd album covers, if you know what I mean. If you want to intellectualise about it, it seems to make a statement about the dehumanization of nature by technology. Or perhaps it was just the wine...

Vézelay Abbey in Burgundy
Still on our weekend trip to Burgundy. We climbed the hill of Vézelay to the 11th century abbey of St. Magdelene. It is here that the relics of Mary Magdalene are kept, according to roman catholic tradition. It is from here that the the crusades were preached, and from where the 3rd Crusade set off. For these and other reasons, this is the starting point of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela (a pilgrimage that many catholic faithful make on foot - starting from here and going over several religious sites in the South of France and Spain to Compostela. It lasts several weeks and the pilgrims are half dead at the end of it).
More pics of the Abbey.

Notre-Dame de Saint Père in Burgundy
We took a weekend trip to Burgundy, to the region of Vézelay, famous for it's abbey which is the starting point for the pilgrimage route of Santeago de Compostela. But at the foot of the famous hill of Vézelay nestles the charming village of Saint Père, which has a jewel of a church, the Notre-Dame de Saint Père. We stayed over at this village because we could not find place in Vézelay, and we are glad we did, for we got to discover this Church which has been described by Romain Rolland as 'Gracious and perfect flower of art'.

Stung in Vienne
June-July is Jazz time in Vienne, when the international jazz festival Jazz à Vienne kicks off in the historic city of Vienne, across the Rhône from Blandine's village. If you remember my post on Vienne last year, Vienne was a major city in the Roman Empire in Gaul. It used to be called Vienna then, not to be confused with the modern day Vienna in Austria.

Malleval - historic village in the bad valley
The historic village of Malleval (old French for bad valley) lies at the base of a rocky valley in the nature park of Pilat, not far from Blandine's home. Converted into a fortified village by Renaud de Forez in the 14th century. Here are some pics of the place I took during a hiking trip in Pilat:-
Long shot of the village from the rim of the valley.
