The Red Tractor of Liberty
This is the English version of the French-Language song "Le tracteur rouge
de la liberté" which won me the First Prize at Chansons Sans Frontière, 2014, in Caen, France
Where are my farmhands?
Where are my slaves?
Where are those wretched knaves?
Ain’t no one coming back,
Mr. Man
They’re off riding
The red tractor of liberty
It’s rusty, it clangs
The paint’s peeling, but it’s red
The tire’s worn out,
But that’s OK.
They call it the red tractor of liberty
My fields lie fallow
My pastures burn dry
Someone’s gonna get a whipping, I say
Your whip won’t fly no more
Mr. Man
They’re off riding
The red tractor of liberty
Ain’t noone coming back
For your whip and your scorn
For your shouting and your yelling
Mr. Man
They’re off riding
The red tractor of liberty
My cows low unmilked
My cotton spoils unpicked
Someone here’s gonna get a kick, I say
You won’t be kicking no more
Mr. Man
They’re all gone
Riding the red tractor of Liberty
My woman has spawned
And the tyke – it’s brown
Someone’s gonna hang before dawn, I say
Your noose has gotten loose
Mr. Man
Ain’t noone gonna hang.
Oh and by the way
Your wife was a good lay
They took her out riding
The red tractor of liberty
Come back, come back, I say
I’ll pay you a dime
Milk my cows, chop my wood
I’ll give you two dimes.
Too late, Mr. Man
Ain’t no one wants your dime
They all wanna ride
The red tractor of liberty
